Fever Thermometer Types
Taking temperature orally or rectally are two common methods used to measure body temperature. Oral temperature is taken by placing a thermometer under the tongue or in the mouth, while rectal temperature is taken by inserting a thermometer into the rectum.
Both methods provide accurate readings, but rectal temperature tends to be slightly higher than oral temperature. Rectal temperature is considered the most accurate method for infants, young children, and people who are unconscious or unable to cooperate with oral temperature measurement. However, oral temperature is less invasive and can be taken more quickly. It is also a preferred method for older children and adults.
Ultimately, the choice between oral and rectal temperature will depend on the individual's age, health status, and personal preference.
Choose the bulb type for the location you want to take the measurement.

Rectal:
- stubby bulb
- 4 minutes

Rectal thermometers can be used orally if sterile.
Oral thermometers should not be used rectally.
